Aghan Hound Racing
Track racing has been a popular pastime for Afghan Hound owners for as long as I can remember, and that’s going back a long while.
In fact track racing, I would go so far as to say, is a passion for many die hard Afghan Hound Lovers and I confess to being one of them.
I can only speak for racing in the UK, but it saddens me to see that this last couple of years it has been on the decline.
There are many factors responsible for this, but to see the demise of tracks like Warwick, South East and Hinckley to name but a few saddens my heart.
In the 80′s and 90′s Afghan Hound racing was at its peak with many clubs participating and some clubs even having 2 or 3 teams.
There was the Eficoat competition and of course the ever popular Afghan Hound Intertrack competition at the end of each season to find the Afghan Hound Supreme Racer.
I will be doing a review of Afghan Hound racing including in the USA, Canada and Australia over the next few Months.
Afghan Hound Showing
Showing, for the Afghan Hound owner and in fact for all breeds of dog from the Rottweiler to the Pekingese is almost a religion. It’s the thing that drives the standards of every breed of dog throughout the world.
From the pet owner, Afghan Hound or otherwise, who wants their beloved pet to be recognised as a champion to the more serious dog breeder who wants the endorsement that their breeding is the best, showing is a passion to end all passions. It has mammoth support and of course tremendous commercial implications.
Every week end people in their thousands, tens of thousands pack their cars with dog/s and necessary equipment and travel miles, even hundreds of miles to attend a dog show in eager anticipation.
More often than not though the result is a long drive home….empty handed. But never mind there is always next week.
I didn’t start showing until the mid 90′s but I have to say I fully understand the hipe.
I wasn’t what a seasoned shower would class as successful, I had one or two friends that were, but I was lucky enough to have a young Afghan Hound bitch that did do an impressive amount of winning, despite my lack of handling skills.
I have to tell you that the adrenaline rush is second to none, especially if it’s a big champ show and big classes…wow!!
And if you do well at Crufts you are in seventh heaven.. at least for a day or two.
Again I will be doing a regular review of Afghan Hound show world over the next few Months.
I will also be doing special feature on showing in general, all breeds, on my Amoremia World of Dogs site and looking at the commercial side of the dog world.
